I’ve been going back to work on my Masters of Fine Arts with a focus on Graphic Design. This new series was part of my Advanced Typography class and it was intense and fun. I did a paper on contemporary artists who’s work incorporates typography. then I pulled small pieces out of their paintings to do paintings of my own. Ended up doing all 26 letters of the alphabet. This was done in Adobe Sketch and you can see the process at: https://youtu.be/HGcH3bKWkz8
This is the second quick drawing I did based on a painting by Max Hammond. Trying to make it my own, I used Prismacolor colored pencil instead of his rich oils. This is a small sketch about 6″ x 9″ that I finished in late January.
I’ve been looking at the work of Max Hammond and so enjoy the color, passion, strength and freedom of expression he pours into his work. I’ve been playing with his ideas and making them my own, while trying hard to loosen up and work more quickly. These small sketches are the result.
Very thankful to have Winery Road in the collection of Jim and Amber O’Donnell. I’ve worked with Jim for years and was delighted that he chose this piece to hang in his home. This piece was painted during a trip with a large group of friends to Washington Missouri. We all stopped on the side of the road to get our photo taken and I saw this view and took a lot of photos of the area. Then went back into my studio to paint this image in acrylic on canvas. This same image was also used on a wine label for Collver Family Winery in Barry Illinois.
